Q

What is the Boundary Layer, and what aids in creating a good laminar flow?

A

Air immediately above the surface of the airfoil that tends
to “stick” to the surface. Vortex generators, help airflow
separation by forcing the air to stick to the surface

Q

Difference between AOI and AOA?

A

AOI-Angle of the wing chord line and the longitudinal axis to which its mounted (fuselage)

AOA-Angle of the chord line of an airfoil and relative wind

Q

Define “Wing Tip Vortices and give 3 examples of how to
prevent them.

A

WTV are created by high pressure air from the bottom of
the wing “swirling’ around the top (creates loss of wing
efficiency).
i. Winglets
ii. Tip Tanks
iii. Drooped Tips
iv. Higher aspect ratio wings
v. Tip Plates.

Q

Explain what the wing “Wash-in” and “Wash-out”

A

Wash-out= AOI of wing decreased at the tip compared to
root.

Wash-in= AOI of wing increased at the tip compared to
root.

9
Q

When inspecting a turnbuckle after you have safety wired it, what are you checking for?

A

No more than 3 threads are exposed on either side of the
turnbuckle

there is a minimum of 4 wraps of safety wire around the shank
of the turnbuckle

verify that the correct method and wire were used

that everything is tight and uniform

Q

When would you need/want to rig fixed and moveable components of an aircraft?

A

After remove and install of components

if a/c was damaged

scheduled MTC inspections

pilot complains that the aircraft requires excessive trim

Q

Explain the process of Nicopress cable swagging

A

Properly wrap the cable around the thimble and through the
sleeve at a proper length

make your 1st swag at the center of the sleeve

2nd swag at the base of the thimble

3rd swag at the other end of the sleeve

16
Q

What are the 4 forces of flight?

A

Lift
Weight
Drag
thrust

17
Q

When does an airplane stall?

A

When the AOA reaches its exceeds it critical point of maximum
lift

18
Q

Explain Bernoulli’s Principle as it applies to an airfoil shape

A

The air over the wing has a further distance to travel than the
air under the wing. The faster air on top of the wing creates a
low pressure vs. the slower air under the wing creating a higher
pressure. Pressure differential creates lift

19
Q

Lift of an airfoil is determined by what 5 things

A

Shape of airfoil
airfoil area
AOA
Air density
Speed of air relative to the airfoil

20
Q

What is a symmetry check?

A

Checking the “squareness” of the aircraft from the longitudinal axis

21
Q

What is a vortex generator?

A

Small airfoil shaped devices that may be attached to wings

Prevents boundary layer separation by forcing the air to to stick to the surface

22
Q

What is a wing fence?

A

Vertical plates attached to the top of the wings

Prevents air flowing span-wise or lengthwise on a wing

23
Q

What are slots?

A

force the air down on the aileron preventing separation

24
Q

Unbalanced control surfaces can cause?

A

Excessive flutter or vibration during flight

25
Q

What is the control rigging procedure?

A

Follow the TCDS or the AMM will tell you the control travel

26
Q

Tools for rigging?

A

Protractor and a Cable tensiometer

27
Q

What is a universal propeller protractor use for?

A

To measure control surface deflection

28
Q

Why is cable tension important?

A

The correct cable tension changes with temperature. The fuselage changes size with temperature changes

29
Q

What are turn buckles for?

A

For adjusting cable tension and length
Adjusting rigging of controls
Joining two cables together

30
Q

What are fairleads for?

A

Used to protect the cable where it runs close to other structure
