basal ganglia vs limbic system Flashcards
basal ganglia components (nuclei)
masses of GRAY matter deep within each cerebral hemisphere
G(L)O CA PUT
consists of:
- globus pallidus
- putamen
- caudate nucleus
- substantia nigra
- surrounds thalamus
basal ganglia functions
controls initiation/termination of movements
- putamen: body autonomic
- caudate nucleus: eye movements
- globus pallidus: muscle tone engagement
controls subconscious contractions of skeletal muscles
controls initiation/termination of some cognitive processes
limbic system
located in medial surface and inside of hemispheres (surrounding basal nuclei and thalamus)
produces emotional aspects of behavior and stores/transforms new memories
limbic system components (nuclei)
HAM
hippocampus: short-term memory to long-term
amygdala: emotions
mammillary body: smell
anterior thalamic nucleus
- pheromones are recognized by this system
parkinson’s disease
RELATED TO BASAL GANGLIA (when substantia nigra is damaged)
resting tremors
slow movement
rigidity
memory loss, cognitive impairment
