Basal Ganglia Flashcards
What are the three areas of the basal ganglia?
Caudate, putamen, globus pallidus
What is the name for the caudate and putamen?
Corpus striatum
What’s the name for the putamen and globus pallidus?
Lentiform nucleus
What are the three motor functions of the basal ganglia?
Initiation and maintenance. Inhibit unnecessary and antagonist movement. Switch motor programs.
What is the internal capsule?
White matter structure. Separated lentiform nucleus from caudate and thalamus
What is the purpose of the globus pallidus?
Output to thalamus
GPe between other nuclei and GP
Main blood supply to basal ganglia?
MCA
What’s the corticostriatal pathway?
Cerebral cortex-> caudate and putamen
Nigrostriatal pathway?
SNPC and midbrain input to caudate and putamen
What type of neurones in the corpus striatum?
Medium spiny 75%
What sort of input from
Cortex
SNPC
local circuit
Glutamatergic
Dopaminergic
GABAergic
What is the output of the corpus striatum?
SNPR and GP
Subthalamic nucleus?
Input: GPe and cortex
Output: GPi and SNPR
VAVL thalamic nuclear complex?
Major outflow site. Input from GPi
Projects to motor areas of cerebral cortex
When does the direct pathway become active?
When there is a change of motor programme
