Barriers… (W2) Flashcards
What are the 3 barriers that protect the nervoussystem
① bony structures
② meninges - 3 membranes surrounding and supposing
③ barriers between internal and external chemical environments
Describe the dura matter
- Outermost layer
- tough fibrous membrane loosely surrounding the brain
- blood and nerve supply
Describe the arachnoid mater
- Soft sac- like membrane
- subarachnoid space contains CSF and CNS arteries and veins (tight junctions)
Describe me pia mater
- Follows contours of brain
- adheres to the basement membrane of the brain glial surface lining
Define dural reflections
2 large reflections of the dura extending into the cranial cavity at the longitudinal and transverse fissures
What are the 2 main dural reflections
① Flax cerebelli
② Tentorium cerebelli
What is the flax cerebelli
Extends from the cranial roof between the cerebral hemispheres ( crescent shaped )
- longitudinal fissure
- separates cerebral hemispheres
-Attached to crista galli of emmoid bone
What is the tentorium cerebelli
Horizontal shelf of dura between the cerebrum and cerebellum
-separates the occipital and temporal lobes from the cerebellum and brainstem
- ensures me cerebellum and underlying brainstem are protected from pressure caused by heavier upper part of brain
What is CSF
Clear colouress liquid that occupies the ventricular system
- mixture of water, proteins at low concentrations
Where is CSF produced
Choroid plexus
- extends into the ventricles on the dorsal surfaces
What are the 3 cellular components of the vascular core
- pial cells
