What is a baroque solo concerto?
Where a single solo instrument (violin, cello, recorder, flute, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, flute) is played with the accompaniment of a string orchestra (together with the continuo)
What movements are in a baroque solo concerto?
3 movements- fast, slow, fast with a single mood or style within each movement
What were fast movements often written in?
Ritornello form
What are features of the first movement of a baroque solo concerto?
Ritornello form or fugue, brisk, purposeful
What are features of the second movement in a baroque solo concerto?
Da capo aria/ternary form, slow, song-like, often featuring dotted rhythms
What are features of the third movement in a baroque solo concerto?
Ritornello form or fugue, fast cheerful
What is ternary form?
Ternary form is made up of three sections. The repeat of section A is not always exact, but is very close to the opening section.
What is da capo aria?
where the voice returns to the top of the movement (da capo) and repeats the first section of the music. It was common for the soloist to add ornamentation when the first section was repeated.
What are features of baroque solo concertos?
Ornamentation, sequences, imitation, mainly polyphonic texture (with some homophonic sections for contrast), terraced dynamics, contrasting sections between solo passages accompanied by the continuo, tutti passages where everyone plays together
