Ornaments
Trill - rapid movement between two notes
Acciaccatura - a crushed note played before main note

Oratorio
Stories from the bible set to a large scale orchestra and singers but without costumes scenery or action. Handels messiah is an example
Imperfect and interrupted cadences
Imperfect - feels unfinished
Interrupted - Interrupted by a new note
Basso continuo
A firm bass line and florid melodic line. Notated by a bass line where players can fill out the chords. Usually played by harpsichord or organ with reinforcement from instruments such as the cello or bassoon
Concerto grosso
Concerto grosso is the contrast of a small group of solo instruments called the CONCERTINO with the main body of the ensemble made up of strings called the RIPIENO.
Passacaglia
Variations of a ground bass
Ritornello
Means little return.
Main theme played by ripieno in a concerto grosso.
May return frequently throughout the movement. The
Obbligato
When a prominent instrument preforms in a vocal work. Used as a decoration over the vocal line.
Da capo aria
Found within the scores for oratorio and opera.
Typically in the score for a da capo aria, the third section is not written out but the instruction da capo (from the beginning) is given instead. The repeat of the A section is performed with the solo ornamented (think TAM)
Recitative
A type of vocal writing where the music follows the rhythm of speech.
Usually a short section for a solo voice with sparse accompaniment
Scales
Harmonic minor - notes stay the same ascending and descending. Sounds like Egyptian music.
Melodic minor - notes alter when descending. Think melody = changes
