Normal will say Sally will look in her box, where autistic will say Anne’s as they can’t employ theory of mind
What as the aim of Baron-Cohens study?
to investigate if high functioning adults with autism or aspergers would be impaired on a theory of mind tests called the reading in the mind in the eyes task?
What method was this study?
quasi, the IV is natural occurring and the do is performance on the advanced test of theory of mind

1: 16 autism, normal intel, 13m 3f, advert recruited
2: control 50, normal Intel, 25m 25f, random from uni panel
3: 10 Tourette’s, referral from London, 8m 2f, normal Intel.
What was the procedure of Baron-Cohen?
All group 1 passed first and second order false belief tasks. Eyes task, strange stories and 2 control tasks presented at random.
Eyes tasks photo of 25 faces from magazines, black and white, same size and same region of face.
Each pic was shown for 3 seconds, and given question of 2 opposite mental States to choose from (max score 25)
The 2 control task were gender recognition and basic emotion recognition task.
What were the 2 control tasks?
Gender recognition; eyes of different genders (25 mx)
Basic emotion; 6 faces used, happy, sad, angry etc
What were the results of Baron-Cohen?
Autistic adults had more difficulties.
Adults with autism: mean; 16.3
Adults normal: mean; 20.3
Adults with Tourette: 20.4
Normal males more trouble than normal females.
Strange stories one of Tourette made mistakes as those with autism did
No differences in gender and emotion tasks
What was the conclusion of Baron-Cohen?
There is evidence of subtle mind reading deficits on Intel adults on autistic spectrum
The eyes task is a pure theory of mind test for adults because there is no context.
