“On Your Shift” Time and Sub Policies

A

“On Your Shift” Policies
Timeliness
: Arrive 10 minutes early to every shift so workers can get to class. If you are unable to do so, communicate that ahead of time to the barista who works before you.

When Leaving Shift
: Communicate the following the barista coming in after you when possible:
1) how much brewed coffee is left in the airpot
2) what you’ve completed on the cleaning card
3) any issues that have come up
4) anything that is running low
5) anything you’ve communicated to Director or Shop Assistants
Sickness
: If you are sick, feel sick, look sick, you CANNOT work. If unsure, check with Health Services. Contact the Director
to alert them and follow the policy for finding a sub. If it is right before your shift (you woke up sick and
you’re opening) or if you’re too sick to text and ask for subs (throwing up, etc), call or text the Director and they will assist you.

Subs
: It is the barista’s job to secure a sub for any shift they need to miss. Please respect fellow baristas by securing subs well in advance. See the note above about finding a sub in the case of sickness. When you have found a sub, update the Google Calendar and then let the Director know.

Additional Rules
: No complimentary beverages or unapproved discounts may be given. Any violation may result in immediate termination of employment. Our business cannot sustain this in a context where we all know many people; this rule also protects you from having friends ask or expect something free. The rule is simple: never give anything away for free.
: No one should be behind the counter except those on shift or supervisors.
: Do not give away coffee or pastries at end of night. Only baristas and leadership team members may take leftover pastries.

Meetings
: Baristas will attend monthly meetings for edification and information from Director.
: Each barista’s performance will be formally reviewed by the Director at least once per school year. Baristas will be required to meet with the Director one-on-one at least twice a semester.

Q

“On Your Shift” Personal Policies

A

Personal Belongings
: Place any belongings (incl. backpack, jacket, cellphone, etc) in the back closet of either Modero or Barefoots in the designated area determined by Management. Cellphones are considered a personal belonging item you cannot have on your person while working with food. Leave in an accessible location near your items if you need it during an emergency. Otherwise, Managmentwill contact you on the shop phones.

Cleanliness
: Wash your hands at the start of your shift with warm & soapy water for 20 seconds (see pg 82)
: Use sanitizer in between the register & cup handling.
: Wash your hands periodically throughout your shift and after you touch your face, hair, clothes, etc.
: Practice the double handwashing method after using the restroom (see page 82)

Food & Drink
: No open drinks are allowed behind the bar (or in pantry area). All drinks must be a container with a lid and a straw.
: No personal food is allowed behind the bar or in the fridge and you may not leave your shift to get food.
: No food consumption is allowed behind the bar (or in the pantry area). If you have a shift during a mealtime, you can pack a sandwich (provided it is kept with your personal belongings) and clock out to take a 10 min break to eat at one of the tables in the cafe area, provided no customer comes to the counter.

Homework / Personal Work
: You may not do homework or any personal work while you are on a shift unless certain exceptions apply. Books & laptops are considered personal belongings and are not allowed behind the bar or in pantry area. If there are no customers, refer to the cleaning checklist. You can always stamp sleeves, make tea bags, or deep clean something.

Double/Triple Shifts
: When working with another barista, remember that you are at work and there to serve customers. Keep in mind that others can hear you, and never let a conversation with another barista hinder you from greeting a customer immediately.

Enjoy drinks AND know the drinks
: Baristas may enjoy ONE 12oz espresso/specialty drink and ONE 12oz drip coffee or tea (hot or iced) per 4 hours on shift. Use this to learn the drinks. Make sure you write your name in the notes section before you save it to the tab.
