what risk is associated with apple shape body?
higher risk of weight-related health problems

- CVD
- stroke
- cataracts
- pulmonary disease
- diabetes
- cancer
- hypertension
what are the 3 main bariatric surgery options?
- restrictive
- malabsorptive
- combination of both
what are the 3 main surgical options?
- laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding
- laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
- laparoscopic gastric bypass
what is laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding?
The surgeon places a band around the upper part of your stomach to create a small pouch to hold food. The band limits the amount of food you can eat by making you feel full after eating small amounts of food
advantages of adjustable gastric banding?
- Relatively minor surgery
- Reversible and adjustable
- Low operative complication rate
disadvantages of adjustable gastric banding?
- Requires an implanted medical device
- Easier to ‘cheat’
- Risk of prolapse /slippage
- 15% require revisional surgery
what is laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?
Procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size, by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature
advantages of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?
- good medium- term outcomes
- no small bowel manipulation
- no foreign body
disadvantages of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy?
- more invasive surgery
- long staple line = bleeding/leak
what is laparoscopic gastric bypass?
a small stomach pouch is created to restrict food intake. a y-shaped section of the small intestine is then attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the lower stomach, the duodenum and first portion of the jejunum
advantage of gastric bypass?
quick and dramatic weight loss
disadvantages of gastric bypass?
- more invasive surgery
- malabsorptive component requires lifelong supplements
complications of gastric surgery?
- anastomotic leak
- DVT/PE
- infection
- malnutrition
- hair loss
- excess skin
