what is the definition of a bariatric person?
an individual of any age who has limitations to health & social care due to PHYSICAL SIZE, HEALTH, MOBILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ACCESS
what are the contributing factors for obesity?
energy imbalance - calories in and out
some factors such as genetics, socioeconomic status, and individual decisions play a significant role.
what are some difficulties during treatment that you may encounter on an obese patient?
- loss of anatomical landmarks, access issues - large cheeks, tongue
- ID blocks may be harder
- intra-oral radiography
- long procedures could lead to acute leg oedema
- excessive fat in tissues and absorption of medication
what are the dental implications of bariatric patients?
caries:
- higher caries risk due to diet high in processed sugars
wound healing:
- extractions, surgical PDL treatment, biopsies, bariatric patients more likely to have reduced immune function - delayed wound healing
tooth-wear:
- erosive tooth wear, sugary and acidic drinks etc.
