Scribbling
Children make random marks on a page that aren’t related to letters or words. Skill of holding a pen/pencil
Mock handwriting
Children practise drawing shapes on paper, though they are difficult to decipher what they represent. First sight of emergent handwriting with pseudo letters appearing
Mock letters
Children produce random letters, but no awareness of spacing or matching letters to symbols
Conventional letters
Children start matching sounds and symbols. They write letters that match the sounds heard/spoken. Words bot spaced out. Initial consonants used to represent words
Inverted spelling
Most words spelled phonetically, though some similar and familiar words are correctly spelt
Appropriate spelling
Sentences become more complex as the child becomes more aware of standard spelling patterns, writing becomes more legible
Correct spelling
Most words now spelled correctly
