Bandura, Ross & Ross (1961) Flashcards
What year did Bandura et al conduct his experiment?
1961
What was Banduras experiment?
He divided 72 children aged 3-5, in two three groups ( the groups were balanced for sex and matched for prior levels of aggression).
Group 1 - watched a person (male or female) be aggressive to a bobo doll.
Group 2 - watched a person (male of female) be non-aggressive to bobo doll.
Group 3- watched nothing (control)
What was banduras 4 hypotheses?
1- group 1 would imitate aggressive behaviour
2 - group 2 would be less aggressive than both group 1 & 3. Non aggressive models would have a aggression inhibitating effect.
3- participants would imitate models of the same sex as them to a greater degree.
4-boys should be more predisposed to aggression than girls
What was the Post model procedure?
The children were taken to a second room where there were many attractive toys but they were told that these toys were reserved for other children (aggression arousal).
Then taken to a third room where there was a bobo doll, a mallet, a peg board, two dart guns and a hanging punch ball (also some non aggressive toys)
The children were allowed to play freely in this room for 20 mins
Bandura and colleagues filmed the play behaviour and then coded it.
What was the independent variable and the dependent variable?
IV- the type of model that the children were exposed to.
DV- the amount of aggressive behaviour observed for each child
What were the results?
Hypothesis 1 was partly supported however there wasn’t always higher aggression than the control group
Hypothesis 2 was partly supported
Hypothesis 3 &4 were supported
What conclusions were drawn after banduras experiment?
Aggressive behaviour can be learned through observation and imitation.
Observation of adult models displaying aggression communicates permissiveness for aggressive behaviour.
Boys are more unitive of physical aggression; this may be due to stereotyping of this behaviour
What Christians were there of banduras experiment?
Would children behave like this out of a lab? (Ecological validity)
Children might think that in this environment the behaviour is acceptable and that the adults condone this behaviour.
Aggressive to inanimate objects not people
Variations of individual children.
How was banduras experiment applied in to the real world? W
US congressional hearings on media violence (school shootings)
Film/tv/radio ratings and parental advisories
Reduction of media violence
