What did Bandura want to study overall?
Social learning in the context of aggression.
His experiment led him to suggest that learningcan occur through observing and imitating role models.
1) Define social learning theory
- A theory developed from behaviourism and developed by Bandura. Which involves, the learning of a new behaviour, that obsevred in a role model/ And is imitated in the absence of that model.
Name 3 ways SLT builds on behaviourism.
- Research focused on human ppts
- Indirect experince is recognised/ and its capacity to change behaviour
- Internal processes are also considered (not just observable behaviour)
2) Observation and imitation
- the main idea of SLT is behaviour is learnt by observation and imitation
3) Vicarious reinforcement and punishment
- SLT suggest we are more/less likely to imitate a model if we observe them being rewarded/ pushished for their behaviour.
Model definition
A person who inspires others to imitate behaviours (post/neg)
Vicarious reinforcement
- Observing another being rewarded for their behaviour. Makes imitation of observed behaviour more likely.
Vicarious punishment
Watching another being punished for their behaviour makes imitation of the observed behaviour less likely.
4) Identification
- Models are more likely to be imitated if the observer identifies with them.
- identification is more likely to occur if the model is simialr (race/gender/ethinicity)
- Models are often high staus/ influetial
5) Internal mediation process
- In order for social learning to occur, the observer must form mental representations of observed behaviour.
- and mental representations of the behaviour in terms of future outcomes

Attension- the extent to which we notice certain behaviours.
Retention- How well is the behaviour remembered.
Motor reproduction - the abiloty of the observer to perfom the behaviour.
Motivation- The will to preform the behaviour (influenced by whether the behaviour is rewarded or punished.
