Q

procedure

A
  • 96 children were matched for pre-existing levels of aggression and allocated to one of the three experimental groups and a control group.
    1) the role model was real
    2) shown on a film screen
    3) cartoon character shown on television
    4) control condition where children didn’t see model at all.
following the exposure to the models, they were placed in a room with an experimenter where they were exposed to a mildly frustrating situation to elcicit aggression. then they were allowed to play freely with toys including the bobo doll that were used by models.

Q

results

A

in all three conditions, children displayed significantly higher aggression compared to control. watching a human or cartoon character made no difffernce in the number of aggressive behaviours displayed.

Q

generalisability

A

:( lacks generalisability due to samples involved.
focused his studies on children from the Stanford uni nursery in America. children are more naive than adults which makes the sample high unrepresentative.
therefore, we cannot apply the findings to wider pop, meaning they lack external validity. we can’t be sure whether everyone would be so easily influenced and imitate behaviour of role models.

Q

reliability

A

:) standardised procedures allowing for complete replicability to be undertaken. each child was given the exact same instruction and were exposed to the exact same psychical and verbal behaviour of model.
this means we can replicate study to check for consistency in the findings that we do observe and imitate same sex models.

Q

ethics

A

these children were not old enough to give fully informed consent to take part in the study. also exposing them to an adult beinga aggressive could have led them to be more aggressive.
CA= research was really beneficial to other people
