Aim
Wanted to see if children would imitate the aggression they saw on television.
Sample
48 boys and 48 girls (3-6 yrs)
From Stanford University Nursery School
All matched in groups by their aggression levels
Procedure
4 groups:
- Group 1: 24 children with aggressive live model (data from 61 study_
- Group 2: 24 children with aggressive live model on the television (teletubbies)
- Group 3: 24 children with cartoon character on television (Tom & Jerry)
- Control Group: 24 children didn’t do any of the (data from 61 study)
After watching:
– Made mildly aggressive (same as 61)
– Played with same toys as the 61 study
– Observed for 20 mins at 5 sec intervals via a one way mirror
Observations for 63
There was:
- mallet aggression
- non imitative behaviour (behaviour that was not shown by any of the models
- non aggressive behaviour (sitting around)
Mean Aggression scores:
- Real life aggressive model = 83
- FIlm aggressive model = 92
- Cartoon aggressive model= 99
- Control = 54
Results real life model
- Boys more aggressive than girls
- Boys more aggressive when model was of the same sex than the girls
- Girls imitate aggressive behaviour when same sex model but not of the behaviour involved a mallet or gun
Results Film model
- Boys were more aggressive than the girls but even more when the model was of the opposite sex
- Girls showed higher levels of mallet aggression than boys when model was of the same sex
- Girls showed low gun aggression when model was of the same sex but higher when it was a male.
Results Cartoon model
Boys showed higher aggression that girls
Results Control
- Boys more aggressive than girls
- Boys = higher gun aggression and non imitative aggression

- Control on variables
