Bandura 1961 Flashcards
Aim
to demonstrate if children witnessing aggressive behaviour will imitate the behaviour at any chance given
Sample
36 boys and 36 girls 72 in total
aged from 36-69 months (3-6 years)
Group design
Independents group design
There were 8 groups of 6 people each and 1 control group of 24 people. there were 4 male groups (2 aggressive {1 same sex, 1 different sex} and 2 non aggressive {1 same sex, 1 different sex}) and the same for the girls in the ways the groups were formed.
what were the variables that they were pre tested on?
They were pre tested on
- Verbal aggression
- Physical aggression
- aggression towards inanimate objects
- aggressive inhabitance (showing signs of wanting to show anger but don’t by the end of it)
Stage 1: Observation Stage
In this stage the child was put into a room which was divided into 2: adult side, the side of the room which had the bobo doll, children side, the side which had picture stickers.
The live model demonstrated many different actions, starting from playing with the tinker toys with one group and then for the other group moving onto being aggressive with the bobo doll.
They were in the room for 10 mins
Stage 2: Mild aggression arousal
This was the stage in where the child was taken into another room where there were lots of toys. As the child got close to the toys the experimenter told him/her that those toys were for other children and they weren’t allowed to play with them. This was to instigate the child and make him/her angry.
Stage 3: Imitation Stage
The child was then taken into the last and final room where there were both aggressive and non aggressive toys. they were in this room for 20 mins and they were observed every 5 seconds through a one way mirror.
What were the bases on which the child was tested?
The child was tested on 3 bases:
- Imitation of aggressive behaviour
- Imitation of non aggressive behaviour
- Imitation of behaviour that wasn’t demonstrated by the live model
Other recording were
Mallet aggression
Sitting on the bobo doll
punching the bobo doll
Aggressive gun play (dart gun)
Results of the 1961 Bandura
Children who witnessed aggressive behaviour were more aggressive
Overall boys were more aggressive than the girls.
Boys were more aggressive when their live model was of the same sex
Girls were more physical aggressive when their live model was male and more verbally aggressive when their live model was female
Strengths
- high inter rater reliability meaning that the observation made by the observers separately were similar and they agreed upon the results.
- High internal validity as there is a lot of control on the experiment therefore, controlling extraneous variables
Weaknesses
- There was low population validity as there was a low number of people per group, therefore causing cultural bias as they were all from the local area
- As there are a small number of people per group, if there is an anomaly it will affect the results majorly.
