Q

sample

A
  • 36 Boys and 36 Girls attending Stanford Uni nursery school.
  • Mean age of 4 years and 4 months.
  • 8 experimental groups, each with 6 children and a control group of 24
    children.
  • opportunity sampling

Q

design

A

children rated before hand by teachers whilst player, on a 4 point scale;
- verbal aggression
- physical aggression
- aggression towards inanimate objects
- aggressive inhibition
based on the rating the children arranged in triplets and assigned at random to one of 3 groups
- therefore a matched pairs design

Q

procedure

A

1) Group 1 were taken to a room with toys where they observed an
adult model behaving aggressively. Group 2 taken to same room with toys where they observed
adult behaving non-aggressively.
Control group – No model
2) All groups then taken to a room with nice toys allowed to play for
2 minutes and then told not allowed = mild aggression arousal.
3) Each individual child then taken to a room with toys and observed:
Imitative aggressive responses, Partially imitative responses,
Non-imitative aggressive responses

Q

controls

A
  • Same Bobo doll and other toys
  • Same aggressive / passive behaviour observed
  • Same length of time for aggressive modelling
  • Each child had 20 minutes for stage 3
  • Each child subjected to same stage 2
  • Children assessed beforehand for aggressive rating.

Q

conclusions

A
  • Supports observing behaviour
    causes imitation
  • It moves on from Skinners operant conditioning that behaviour will only be imitated with a reward.
  • There was no rewards given in this
study, but imitation was still seen.
