background
can kids learn aggressive behaviour from watching TV
aim
To investigate if aggressive behaviour can be learnt in children by imitating an aggressive role model.
sample
- 36 Boys and 36 Girls attending Stanford Uni nursery school.
- Mean age of 4 years and 4 months.
- 8 experimental groups, each with 6 children and a control group of 24
children. - opportunity sampling
design
children rated before hand by teachers whilst player, on a 4 point scale;
- verbal aggression
- physical aggression
- aggression towards inanimate objects
- aggressive inhibition
based on the rating the children arranged in triplets and assigned at random to one of 3 groups
- therefore a matched pairs design
IV
- The behaviour of the model – aggressive and non-aggressive
- The gender of the model
- Gender of the child
DV
- Observations of demonstrated behaviour from the child.
- Imitative aggressive responses, Partially imitative and Non-imitative aggressive responses.
conditions
- Control Group – no model
- Observed male aggressive model
- Observed female aggressive model
- Observed male non-aggressive model
- Observed female non-aggressive model
procedure
1) Group 1 were taken to a room with toys where they observed an
adult model behaving aggressively. Group 2 taken to same room with toys where they observed
adult behaving non-aggressively.
Control group – No model
2) All groups then taken to a room with nice toys allowed to play for
2 minutes and then told not allowed = mild aggression arousal.
3) Each individual child then taken to a room with toys and observed:
Imitative aggressive responses, Partially imitative responses,
Non-imitative aggressive responses
controls
- Same Bobo doll and other toys
- Same aggressive / passive behaviour observed
- Same length of time for aggressive modelling
- Each child had 20 minutes for stage 3
- Each child subjected to same stage 2
- Children assessed beforehand for aggressive rating.
method used
mix o flab and observation
results
mean number of imitative physical aggressive acts
aggressive female model;
G = 5.5, B = 12.4
aggressive male model;
G = 7.2, B = 25.8
non-aggressive female model;
G = 2.5, B = 0.2
non-aggressive male model;
G = 0.0, B = 1.5
control (no model);
G = 1.2, B = 2.0
results
Mean number of imitative verbal
aggressive acts
aggressive female model;
G = 13.7, B = 4.3
aggressive male model;
G = 2.0, B = 12.7
non-aggressive female model;
G = 0.3, B = 1.1
non-aggressive male model;
G = 0.0, B = 0.0
control (no model);
G = 0.7, B = 1.7
conclusions
- Supports observing behaviour
causes imitation - It moves on from Skinners operant conditioning that behaviour will only be imitated with a reward.
- There was no rewards given in this
study, but imitation was still seen.
vicarious laerning
when behaviour is learned through observing the behaviour of others
social learning theory
idea that we can learn through observing the behaviour of others and we do not have to copy behaviour to learn it
