Cantabile
Italian for “in singing style”; appears often at the beginning of movements as in “andante cantabile” - at walking speed and in a singing style
aleatoric
music in which some element of the composition is left to chance, and/or some primary element of a composed work’s realization is left to the determination of its performer(s)
glissando
a continuous slide upward or downward between two notes
syncopation
the displacement of the usual rhythmic accent away from a strong beat onto a weak beat
ostinato
a continually repeated musical phrase or rhythm
blend
to sound like one instrument or voice
balance
the adjustment of volume and timbre between instruments or voices
key signature
any combination of sharps or flats found after the clef at the beginning of each stave indicating the key of a composition
tempo
Italian for “time”; the speed at which a piece of music is played
clef
a sign that specifies the note to be indicated by one of the lines, from which other notes may be gauged
