Cantabile
Italian for “in singing style”; appears often at the beginning of movements as in “andante cantabile” - at walking speed and in a singing style
duet
a piece of music written for two performers
intonation
Intonation is the exactness of pitch or lack of it in playing or singing. Collective intonation is that of a group of instruments, where slight individual variations in pitch can be lost in a generally more favourable effect
key signature
any combination of sharps or flats found after the clef at the beginning of each stave indicating they key of a composition
key
indicates the scale used and the key note or home note, on the chord of which it must end
maestoso
Italian for “majestic”; used to suggest a majestic manner of performance, either in mood or speed
aleatoric
music in which some element of the composition is left to chance, and/or some primary element of a composed work’s realization is left to the determination of its performer(s)
glissando
a continuous slide upward or downward between two notes
cue
an extract from the music for another part printed, usually in smaller notes, within a performer’s part as a signal to enter after a long rest or to play those notes if that particular instrument is missing
divisi
“separate” —used as a direction in music for orchestral players reading the same musical staff to divide into two or more voice parts —abbr. “div”
