Much of the town is on the floodplain

Why was the scheme need?
A
Banbury had floods in the past
In 1998 flooding closed the railway station, shut roads and caused £12.5 million
In 2007 was flooded again

What social responses have there been?
A
The A361 is now raised so it stays open during floods
Quality of life was improved with foot paths and green areas
Less anxiety about flooding

Economic responses
A
- The scheme cost 18.5 million
- 441 houses and 73 businesses protected at a value of over 100 million pounds

Environmental responses
A
- Around 100,000 tonnes of earth were required to build the embankment
- A new biodiversity action plan habitat has been created with ponds, trees and hedgerows
- Part of the floodplain will be deliberately allowed to flood
