A

They split the church into two factions: Catholic and Protestant. These two churches competed with each other for followers, and they did so by using the attention-grabbing witch trials as perverse advertisements for their brand.

What was the Counter reformation?

A

Catholics fighting against Protestant reformation.
Started with Ferdinand II (Emperor) who actively curtailed the religious freedoms of Protestants, to re-invigorate Catholicism.
It was led by zealous prince-bishops who gained momentum with the influence of Jesuit order (extreme Catholics).
Ultimately, the catholic church in retaliation decided to increase the swell of catholicism in Bamberg.

A

. Foreign armies became involved - war began to become about other pre-existing conflicts.
. Famine was resultant of soldiers requisitioning food - villages plundered for food.
. Young men forcibly conscripted.
. All of the above mixed with crop failure and the demands and the economic inconvenience of inflation increased the fear of witches.
