Ballistics Flashcards
Ballistics
The science and study of the motion and impact of projectiles.
Types of Ballistics
Internal
External
Terminal
Internal Ballistics
This is the science of a projectile motion within a firearm. It is most simply all that happens within a firearm from the instant the primer ignites until the bullet leaves the barrel.
External Ballistics
This is concerned with the path of the bullet from the muzzle to the target.
Terminal Ballistics
This is concerned with what happens to the bullet after it hits the target and what the bullet actually does to the target upon impact.
Trajectory
The path the bullet takes from the muzzle of the weapon to the target.
*Bullet will begin to drop immediately after leaving the barrel.
Angular Measurements
360 Degrees= 6,400 Mils
1 degree
= 60 MOA
1 MOA
=1/60th of a degree
1 MOA
=1.047 inches/100 yds
MOA
1 MOA= 1.047 inches @ 100 yds / 1 MOA= 1 in @ 100 yds
MOA size increases uniformly over range
There is an error of less than .5 inches @ 100 yds
MOA in centimeters
1 MOA= 2.87 m @ 100 yds/ 1 MOA= 3 cm @ 100 m
Error is less than 1.5 cm @ 100 m
Final Field Rounding
1 MOA @ 100m or 100 yds=1 inch
Error is less than .5 inches @ 900m or 1000 yds
MIL
Same function as MOA
1 MIL= 3.375 MOA/ 1 Mil- 3.5 MOA
*Error is less than 1 inch @ 900 m or 1000 yds
