Ballast: Chapter 14 - Codes and Regulations Flashcards
Fire Resistance Rating
Length of time that a construction material or assembly can withstand a standardized fire resistance test
Name three fire resistance tests:
- ASTM E119 (walls, floors, ceilings, structural enclosures)
- NFPA 252 (doors)
- NFPA 257 (windows and glass block)
What is a fire damper?
A device located in ducts designed to close automatically on detection of heat to resist the passage of a flame
What is a smoke damper?
A device located in ducts designed to resist the passage of smoke
What is a fire partition?
A wall assembly with a 1-hr rating.
Must be used for walls:
- separating dwelling units (dorms, apartments)
- separating guestrooms in R1 occupancies (hotels)
- separating tenant spaces in shopping centers
- corridor walls
- elevator lobbies in certain groups
What is a fire barrier?
A vertical or horizontal assembly that is fire-resistance rated and designed to restrict the spread of fire, confine it to limited areas, and/or protect egress
TRUE OR FALSE: fire barriers must be continuous from slab to slab, but fire partitions do not need to be.
TRUE
What is the maximum opening allowed in a fire barrier?
25% of the maximum aggregate width of the assembly. No single opening can exceed 156 sqft.
Exceptions can occur with sprinklers and exit enclosure fire doors.
Glazing assembly: W
meets the wall assembly criteria of ASTM E119
Glazing assembly: OH
meets the fire window assembly criteria and hose test of NFPA 257
Glazing assembly: D
meets the fire door assembly of NFPA 252
Glazing assembly: H
meets the fire door assembly hose stream test of NFPA 252
Glazing assembly: T
meets for 30 minutes the 450 deg. temperature rise criteria of NFPA 252
Fire wall
Rated assembly - runs foundation through roof to separate a single structure into different construction types or to allow for a greater FAR by effectively creating 2 buildings
Smoke Barrier
Continuous vertical or horizontal membrane with a minimum fire rating of 1 hr to control passage of smoke
When are textile wall coverings allowed?
- if they are Class A flame spread (ASTM E84) w/ sprinklers
- meet NFPA 265, method B
- meet NFPA 286
Means of egress
continuous and unobstructed path of vertical and horizontal exit travel from any point in a building or structure to a public way
What are the three parts of the means of egress?
- exit access
- exit
- exit discharge
What is a public way?
any street, alley, or similar parcel of land essentially unobstructed from the ground to the sky that is permanently appropriated to the public for public use and has a clear width of not less than 10 ft.
Exit Access
Portion of the means of egress that leads to an exit. Travel distance is measured and regulated.
Exit
Portion of the egress system that provides a protected path of egress between the exit access and the exit discharge. Fully enclosed and fire rated.
Exit Discharge
Portion of the egress system between the termination of the exit and a public way.
Occupant Load
Number of people that a building code assumes will occupy a given building or portion of a building
Occupant Load Factor
the amount of floor area presumed to be occupied by one person. Based on the generic function of building spaces
Common path of egress travel
Portion of the exit access travel distance measured from the most remote point within a story to the point where occupants have separate access to two exits or exit access doorways.
Exit Access Travel Distance
distance that an occupant would have to travel to get from the most remote point in the occupied exit access area to the exit
Which types of rooms can egress travel through?
- one space is accessory to another
- neither room or space is a Group H (high hazard) occupancy
- There is a discernible path of egress to an exit
Which types of rooms can egress NOT travel through?
- storage
- kitchens
- closets
- any lockable rooms
Corridor
fully enclosed portion of an exit access that defines and provides a path of egress travel to an exit - provides limited choices to an occupant regarding paths or direction of travel
Minimum Stair Width for occupant load over 50
44 in
Minimum Stair width for occupant load under 50
36 in
High Rise Building
One with occupied floors more than 75 ft above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access
Area of Refuge
area where people unable to use stairways can remain temporarily while awaiting assistance
Automatic Closing Door
a door that is normally held open but is released to close on activation by a smoke detector or other type of fire alarm system
Combustible Material
Material that will ignite and burn
Exit Court
A court of yard that provides access to a public way for a required exit
Exit Enclosure
Fully enclosed portion of an exit that is only used as part of a means of egress
Fire Area
Area enclosed and bounded by fire walls, fire barriers, exterior walls, or horizontal assemblies of a building
Fire Assembly
An assembly of a fire door, fire window, or fire damper including all required anchorage, frames, sills, and hardware
Fire Exit Hardware
Panic hardware that is listed for use on fire doors
Fire Partition
A fire resistant component used to separate dwelling units in R2 construction and other tenant or guest spaces
