why is intercultural comm important in bali and aus?
- many relationships and situations require IC comm
- Aus work in bali, visit/holiday Bali, business, aid work, international school. important elements in IC relationships.
- need to cultivate and maintain relationships in trade, politics, business.
- Indonesians come for school.
- East Timorese seek refuge from abuse of human rights
What is hybrid society?
one that comprises a range of social and cultural influences and components.
what is a homogenous society?
consists of single cultural/social identity with little immigration and outside influence e.g. many people consider Japan one as limit on immigration intake
list the commonalities between Bali and Aus:
- having ethnicity of indigenous people and diverse ethnic groups living in peace which make both hybrid societies
- speak their own popular language although others who speak different depending on ethnicity.
- both value diversity and multiculturalism
- has history of cultural influences both colonised by European powers
- same social structure - Indo’s motto “unity in diversity” while Aus promotes policy of multiculturalism
what is animism?
belief that natural objects, natural phenomenon, non human e.g. animals, plants possess a spiritual essence

state philosophy designed to unite all varied ethnic groups in indonesia and also to maintain stability
mean five principles that embraces humanitarian ideals.
define acculturation
learning process where knowledge is transferred form one culture to another. Occurs when someone come into direct contact with another culture and has secondary contact through media
important shown through pancasila and acquisition of cultural perceptions and values. Contact with another culture shaped indonesian S+C, resulting in adoption and adaptation of new ideas (Change) yet varied aspects of earlier influences remain (continuity) .
importance of balinese continuity:
through elaborate rituals and ceremonies, strong desire to adhere to tradition.
same can be seen in aus though not strongly, e.g. preserve parts of our heritage such as heritage sites, land rights of indigenous people.
