1. Count the number of carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon. Write the number in front of CO2
2. Count the number of hydrogen atoms in the hydrocarbon. Divide this by two. Write the number in front of H2O
3. Count the total number of oxygen atoms in the right hand side. Divide by two. Write the number in front of O2
