In-group
our perception of who believes what we believe (have similar characteristics to us)
Out-Group
our perception of those who beliefs are dissimilar to us
Racism
belief that inherent difference among various human races-own race is superior to another
Types of Racism
Individual, Interpersonal, and Structural
Discrimination
treatment or consideration of making a distinction in favor for or against a person passed on a group, class, or category to which the person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit- could be based on more than race (gender, age, sexual orientation)
Stereotype
Generalizations about the perceived “typical” characteristics of a social category (age, gender, race, and role). Doesn’t have to be negative connotation
prejudice
an often-negative prejudgment based on characteristics such as race, age, etc. that is not necessarily reasonable or logical
bias-based profiling
unequal treatment by a LEO of any person by stopping, questioning, searching, detaining, or arresting him/her on the basis of the person’s ethic or racial characteristics, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
Criminal Profiling
Profiling based on observed behaviors and characteristics (gang tattoo, etc.)
investigative profiling
key element is based on facts and knowledge, not personal attributes and societal biases. Happens after the fact
confirmation bias
we look for things that confirm our own beliefs (subconsciously and inadvertently) interpret certain things that confirm your idea
Explicit Bias
conscious preference (positive and negative)
Implicit Bias
preference for social category-based stereotypes attitudes that we hold and tend develop early in life and that operate outside of our awareness
Deliberative Thinking
conscious, effortful, controlled, deliberative, slower
Automatic Thinking
unconscious, effortless, automatic, uses associative memory, very fast
