Balanced eq and related calculations Flashcards
What are the key features of a balanced equation?
- Must have an equal number of atoms on either side
- You add more atoms by adding reactants or products to either side
- It’s a method of trial and error.
- They are used to calculate masses of reactants and volume of gases
Define stoichemistry
The ratio in which the reactants react and the products are produced, in simple whole numbers, is called the stoichiometry of the reaction.
What are the 4 state symbols?
S = solid
L (you) = liquid
G = gas
Aq = aqueous
What is aqueous and its difference between liquid?
A solution containing or dissolved in water is aqueous
VS
A pure liquid, often melted from solids. It is also a state of a substance.
What is a titration?
It is an experimental technique to find the concentration of solutions.
Explain the experiment of titrations
- Fill a burette with the acid of known concentration
- Accurately measure an amount of the alkali using a calibrated pipette filler.
- Add the alkali to a conical flask with a few drops of a suitable indicator.
- Run in acid from the burette until the colour just changes, droplet by droplet showing that the solution in the conical flask is now neutral.
- Repeat the procedure, adding the acid drop-wise as you approach the end point, until two values of the volume of acid used at the neutralisation are the same, within experimental error.
What is ionic bonding?
It is the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal, leaving charged ions on products side.
What are spectator ions?
Ions that do not take part in the reaction, bystanders like you.
True or false, ionic compounds in solutions will split into their constituent ions.
True, as ionic compounds produce positive and negative ions. Charges will always be equal.
