balance and stability Flashcards
how does equilibrium is achieved
the resultant force and net torque acting upon an object are equal to zero
an object in equilibrium is either at rest, or is moving with a constant velocity because no external force has been applied.
what is stability
resistance of an object to having its equilibrium disturbed.
The more stable the object, the more resistance it has against forces or torques that attempt to disrupt its equilibrium.
what is balance
ability to control the current state of equilibrium; implies conscious effort and coordination
give exemple of stable equilibrium, unstable equilibrium, neutral equilibrium
stable: pyramide on the base
unstable: pyramide on the tips
neutral: a sphere
if a force applied on a object make it fall the gravity act as a _ force
disrupted
if a force applied on a object does make it fall the gravity act as a _ force
restorative
what is the majore factor affecting linear stability
the mass
the greater the mass, the greater the force required linearly accelerate the object
rotational stability is affected by
mass, height of center of gravity and size of base of support
with a larger mass a _ torque must be applied to move an object of greater rotational inertia
greater
the _ the COG, the greater the _ displacement of the COG and the _ the force required to disrupt rotational equilibrium
