Balance and Equilibrium Flashcards
What structures are responsible for balance?
Semicircular Canals-Dynamic Equilibrium
Utricle and Saccule-Static
What are the two types of equilibrium?
Static and Dynamic
How is static equilibrium maintained by the Saccule and Utricule?
These fluid filled sacs have hair cells covered in otoliths. As these shift & move, the hairs bend and send signal to cerebellum
How is dynamic equilibrium maintained?
By 3 semicircular canals. When the head moves side to side or back and forth, fluid moves to give info about DE
What is an Ampulla and it’s function?
A pocket in a semicircular canal that holds a cupula. Cilia attached to hair cells in the cupulas bend as fluid moves, initiating an action potential
