Balance Flashcards
1
Q
Define static balance
A
The ability to maintain stability with the centre of mass over the base of support with the body at rest
2
Q
Define dynamic balance
A
The ability to maintain stability with the centre of mass over the base of support when parts of the body are in motion
3
Q
What are the two types of movements we make to maintain dynamic balance?
A
Anticipatory - Postural adjustments are made before a movement is performed, experience is important
Adaptive - Improve adaptation or balance skills for varying task and environmental conditions
4
Q
What are the functions of posture?
A
- Maintains alignment of body segments
- Anticipate change to allow engagement in voluntary movement
- Helps to react to unexpected perturbations:
mechanical perturbations (changes in force acting on body)
informational perturbations (ambient light/sound)
