Baddeley 1966 Flashcards
what was baddelys study
Encoding STM/LTM
What is the aim of the study
- that material is encoded accoustically in STM
- LTM/STM affected by semantic confusion
what was the procedure in the study
- 4 word lists
LIST A= acoustic similar, cab man can
LIST B= sound different, few cow pen
LIST C= semantic similar, large big
LIST D= semantic different, good huge hot
what was the procedure for STM in the study
75 people, in groups, list repeated four times
- had to recall in correct order
what was the procedure for LTM in the study
list recall not immediate
20 min interval
repeated four times
what were the results of the study
participants remembered more each time
STM= list A did worse, trial 4 was 55% other lists 75%
LTM= list C did worse 55% recall, others recalled 75% , list D had 85% recall
what were the conclusions from the study
-STM is remembered in sounds acoustically
lower % recall when words sound the same
-LTM remembered semantically, by meaning
Limitation/ criticism - STM may not be acoustic
visual codes are STM
-Brandimote et al, participates used visual coding with visual tasks
-where no verbal rehearsal was allowed
Limitation/criticism- more than one kind of LTM
- many different kinds of long term memory
episodic, semantic, procedural - most is semantic but can involve others
