Spread: normal in nasopharynx; immunocompromised - via respiratory droplets
Signs: cough, congestion
Conditions: pneumonia, sinusitis, meningitis
Listeria monocytogenes
Gram positive rod
Facultative anaerobe
Spread: sporadic/ small epidemics usually FOOD borne to immunocompromised (i.e. fetal pregnancy)
Signs: flu-like symptoms in pregnant others; spontaneous abortion; fetal meningitis
Clostridium botulinum
Gram positive rods
Anaerobic
Spread: can foods (contaminated with botulism toxin)
Signs: paralysis, dysphagia
Clostridium difficile
Gram positive rods
Spread: SPORES via inhalation from soil, air, water through human/animal feces contaminate food products
Signs: severe diarrhea and dehydration
*produces exotoxin
