Bacteriodes Flashcards
Characteristics of Bacteriodes
o Gram –ve
o Rod
o strict anaerobes (can survive in brief periods of O2)
o Normal residents of vertebrate intestinal and oral microbiomes
o One of most dominant genera in large intestine of vertebrates
o Nutrition: metabolize complex carbohydrates
How bacteroides are able to tolerate short exposure to O2
o They possess enzymes that detoxify and break down O2 and make it into water
How peritoneal cavity becomes infected
o B Fragilis is most prevalent species in intraabdominal abscesses from peritoneal cavity
Infection of peritoneal cavity caused by…
- Rupture bowel
- Ruptured appendix
- Abdominal surgery
Why B. Fragilis predominates in intraperitoneal abcesses
o Evades phagocytosis
o Tolerates initial oxygenated environment
o Thrives once environment becomes anaerobic
B fragilis, encapsulated? T or F
True
B fragilis is oxygen intolerant? T or F
F
Once O2 in the peritoneal cavity is used up..what bacteria takes over?
B. Fragilis
How are abscesses found?
Cat scan
Whats the procedure after a cat scan with B Fragilis?
Culturing fluid drained from abscess under anaerobic conditions to determine species present and provide proper chemotherapy
How abscesses are treated: combined surgical-medical therapy
o Surgical + medical therapy
• Surgery: drain abscesses
• Medical: antibiotics
B. frag resistant to many antibiotics. Excellent results with
- Metronidazole
- Clindamycin
- B-lactam-b-lactamase inhibitor combos
- imipenem
