Why do bacterial infections make you feel ill?
The bacteria produce toxins that damage tissues and make you feel ill.
What is salmonella?
A bacterial disease spread by eating contaminated food.
Can cause fever, cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.
How can salmonella be prevented?
By vaccinating animals.
What is gonorrhoea?
An STD caused by bacteria that can cause a thick yellow discharge as well as pain when urinating.
How can gonorrhoea be prevented?
With antibiotics
Using barrier methods
What is measles?
A viral disease that causes fever and a red skin rash. Can be fatal.
Spread by droplets in coughs and sneezes.
How can measles be prevented?
By vaccinating people when they’re young.
What is HIV?
A viral disease that initially causes flu-like symptoms but then attacks the body’s immune system.
Spread by sexual contact or exchange of bodily fluids.
How can HIV be prevented?
By not sharing needles.
What is Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)?
A virus in plants that causes a discolouration of leaves and affects growth as it causes less photosynthesis.
What is rose black spot?
A fungal disease in plants that causes purple or black spots on leaves and affects growth as it causes less photosynthesis.
Spread by wind and water.
How can TMV and rose black spot be dealt with?
Destroying/removing plants that have been infected to stop the disease from spreading.
What is malaria?
A disease caused by protists that can cause fever and death.
How can malaria be prevented?
By stopping mosquitoes from breeding and by using insecticides and mosquito nets.
