Bacteria, Protists, Fungi Flashcards
Why are viruses not alive?
Viruses are not considered alive because they must infect a host cell in order to reproduce
How do viruses reproduce?
- Viruses inject genetic material (either DNA or RNA) into the host cell 2. the genetic material is read to create new viruses inside the cell 3. the new viruses burst out of the cell, killing the cell in the process
Cells vs Viruses
Cells are considered living because they can reproduce on their own; viruses can not
Domain Bacteria
diverse group of prokaryotes that live almost everywhere
Domain Archaea
prokaryotes that live in extreme conditions (really hot, cold, or salty)
3 types of bacteria shapes
- Coccus = round 2. Bacillus = rod-like 3. Spirillum = spiral
Example of pathogenic bacteria
Pathogenic = disease causing; Streptococcus causes strep throat
4 reasons prokaryotes are important to humans
- some protect you against disease 2. some help make our food 3. some fix nitrogen in the soil 4. some break down our waste
Superbugs
bacteria that have become immune to antibiotics
Antibiotics
Medicine that kills bacteria (NOT viruses)
Protist
Eukaryotic (mostly unicelluar) organism
Examples of protists
Amoeba, paramecium, stentor
How do protists move?
Use cilia OR cytoplasmic streaming
Why are protists important to the environment?
Protists are the bottom of the food chain, they also help produce oxygen
How do protists reproduce?
Protists reproduce asexually by binary fission OR sexually
