Bacteria and viruses Flashcards
Prokaryote
an organism that consists of a single-cell that does not have a nucleas
Bacilli
Bacilli is a taxonomic class of bacteria that includes two orders, Bacillales and Lactobacillales, which contain several well-known pathogens such as Bacillus anthracis. Bacilli are almost exclusively gram-positive bacteria. The name Bacillus, capitalized and italicized, refers to a specific genus of bacteria.
Cocci
spherical or round-shaped bacteria
Spirilla
plural spirilla -ˈril-ə : any of a genus of long curved bacteria with a bunch of flagella at both ends.
Binary Fission
the DNA molecule divides and forms two DNA molecules.
Endospore
a structure made by bacteria for survival purposes
Nitrogen Fixiation
Bioremediation
a branch of biotechnology that employs the use of living organisms, like microbes and bacteria to decontaminate affected areas
Antibiotic
against life
Pathogenic bacteria
These bacteria are called pathogens. Pathogens can cause diseases in animals and plants. Some examples of pathogens are leprosy, food poisoning, pneumonia, tetanus, and typhoid fever.
Virus
They’re very tiny, and when they get inside your body, they can make you sick. Viruses cause colds, chicken pox, measles, flu, and many other diseases.
Host
a living animal or plant on or in which a parasite lives
