Bacteria Flashcards
Pathogen
A microorganism capable of causing disease
Pathogenicity
The microbes ability to produce disease in the host
Virulence
Degree of to which microbe produces disease (pathogenic)
Outline the portals of entry
Skin, GI tract, Respiratory tract, Urogenital pathways, conjuctiva/eyes, placenta
What is a natural resovoir?
The population or enviroment in which infectious particles naturally live and reproduce
Tissue tropism
Specific bacteria known to have specific preference for certain tissues therefore only found in some areas of the body
Species specificity
Specific pathogenic bacteria only affect species of animal
Genetic specificity of a species
Certain races or strains within a species are not susceptible to pathogen e.g. Some pigs immune to E.Coli
Genetic specificity of a species
Certain races or strains within a species are genetically immune to pathogen e.g. Some pigs immune to E.Coli
