Bacteria Flashcards
Name three foods that you need bacteria to make?
Cheese, yogurt, milk
What do all bacteria belong to?
The Kingdom Monera (1 cell)
What are ribosomes for?
To make proteins
What are flagella for and are they in all bacteria?
Movement, and no
What are plasmids?
Rings of DNA
Is the slime coat present in all bacteria?
no
What do extremeophiles mean?
It means bacteria that live in very hostile places like acid lakes or icebergs.
Are all bacteria pathogenic?
No
What will a pathogenic bacteria do?
Cause disease
How do you make yogurt?
Collect raw milk from a farm and put it into a mixing vat.
Add skimmed milk powder. This is crucial because it can be the difference between a low-fat yogurt and a Greek yogurt.
Add sugar and milk-proteins.
Pasteurise at 145 degrees Fahrenheit to kill any bacteria harmful to the yogurt.
Add four different types of bacteria to eat natural sugars in the milk and turn them into lactic acid.
Lots of those bacteria are added to create acid which thickens the milk.
What creates yogurts signature mildly sour taste?
Lactic acid.
What are antibiotics?
Drugs derived from living organisms used to cure infections.
What do they treat?
Bacterial and fungal infections.
What do effective antibiotics show?
Selective toxicity killing or disabling the pathogen without damaging the host cells.
