Bacteria Flashcards
Name the bacteria in the red category
Poryphyromonas gingivalis, tannerella forsythia, and tramponema denticola
What are the three virulence factors?
1-fimbrea, pili, and fibrillae (attachment)
2-Capsule (Protections)
3-Endotoxin (Activate inflammatory response)
Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans
Has the ability to invade host epithelial cells, produces leukotoxin (exotoxin) that is thought to kill PMNs and monocytes
What is an endotoxin?
LPS is usually associated with gram negative bacteria, it is part of the cell membrane and only gets releases when bacteria dies and it causes tissue damage.
Porphyromonas gingivalis
Invades epithelial cells, black pigmented bacteroides, able to grow at low pH, thick capsule, proteinases including collagenase
Tannerella forsythia
Invades epithelial cells,
Prevotella intermedia
Elevated in ANUG (trench mouth)
Fusobacterium nucleatum
Most common isolate of sub-gingival samples
Campylobacter rectus
Produces leukotoxin
Peptostreptococcus micros
Gram +, anaerobic, and Asaccharolytic
Sprochetes
Related to NUG and smelly
What defines an active site?
A site that shows greater than 2-2.5mm of attachment loss in 2 months
Initial lesion 2-4 days
Clinically-healthy
Histologically- vasculitis near J.E., Loss of perivasular collagen
Early lesion 4-7 days
Clinically-gingivitis acute form, no pocket, no bone loss (bleeding on probing)
Histologically-
Established lesion 2-3 weeks
Clinically-gingivitis chronic form, no pocket, no bone loss
Histologically- presence of immunoglobulins
