bacteria Flashcards
Prokaryote
an organism that contains of a single cell that dose not have a nucleus.
Bacilli
are rod shaped they have a large surface area
Cocci
are spherical do not dry out as fast as rod shaped bacteria
Spirilla
are long and spiral shaped they use flagella at both ends to move like a corkscrew.
Binary Fission
a form of asexual reproduction in a single celled organism by witch one divides into two cells of the same size.
Endospore
a thick walled protective spore that forms inside a bacteria cell and resists harsh conditions.
Nitrogen fixation
prokaryotic microorganisms that are capable of transforming nitrogen gas from the atmosphere into “fixed nitrogen” compounds, such as ammonia, that are usable by plants.
Bio remediation
the biological treatment of hazardous waste by living organisms
Antibiotic
medicine used to kill bacteria and other microorganism
Pathogenic bacteria
bacteria that causes disease
Virus
a microscopic partial that gets inside a cell and often destroys the cell
