Bacteria Flashcards
What are the 3 Main Bacteria in the notes
Cocci
Bacilli
Spirilli
What is the cell wall composed of in bacteria?
A peptidoglycan layer
How can you identify a positive gram-stained bacteria and what does it indicate?
Purple after stain indicates,
large amount of peptidoglycan cell wall above the phospholipid bilayer
How can you identify a negative gram-stained bacteria and what does it indicate?
Pink (less purple) after stain indicates,
small amount of peptidoglycan cell wall between double phospholipid bilayers
What are Photoautotrophic bacteria?
Bacteria that are photosynthetic and use light as energy source
Ex. Green algae
What are Chemoheterotrophic bacteria?
Bacteria that consume organic molecules for both energy and carbon
Ex. E Coli
What is a commensialism relationship?
When the symbiont benefits and the host remains unharmed
Do all bacteria need oxygen to survive?
No
How did the endomembrane system form in eukaryotes?
It formed when the plasma membrane invaginated or folded in on itself
How did the motichondria form in eukaryotes?
One prokaryote engulfed another prokaryote and the inner prokaryote became the mitochondria
What is some evidence supporting the idea that mitochondria were come from endosymbiosis of another prokaryote?
Mitochondria has its own circular DNA, has ribosomes, splits by binary fission, and has similar shape
