Bact metabolism Flashcards
1
Q
Obligate (strict) aerobes
A
-grow in presence of oxygen only
-only O2 respiration (e.g. no fermentation or anaerobic respiration)
Examples:
Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Haemophilus influenzae
2
Q
Facultative anaerobes
A
can use aerobic respiration and fermentation/anaerobic respiration
include most pathogens
Examples:
Escherichia coli (O2 respiration and ferments)
Staphylococcus aureus (O2 respiration and ferments)
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (O2 and NO3- respiration)
3
Q
Aerotolerant anaerobes
A
not killed by oxygen (have or can use exogenic SOD, catalase, etc.) respire anaerobically or can ferment do not respire O2 Examples: Streptococcus pneumonia Streptococcus pyogenes
4
Q
Obligate (strict) anaerobes
A
usually fermentation only killed by oxygen, because of the lack of enzymes that neutralize superoxide anions and its products superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalase peroxidase Examples: Clostridium botulinum Bacteroides fragilis
5
Q
Microaerophilic bacteria
A
grow -low oxygen (below 21% atmosphere level) killed -high oxygen Examples: Borrelia burgdorferi
