Lifestyle of local Iwi prior to European settlement

A

They used the forest to gain food by gathering the resources. They hunted animals by wing spears, traps and decays. To store birds they plucked, cleaned, boiled and preserved it in their own fat. Preserved this way it could last a whole year. They usually hunted for food by setting traps.

Q

Impacts the Maori and European had on the natural environment

A

Both Maori and European used the land in similar ways, such as hunting for food and setting traps. They hunted many animals to extinction, and even more to critically endangered, and used the land for their own benefits. But once they realised the damage they didn’t hesitate to do their best to protect the land, creating national parks and protecting the endangered animals. Both the Maori and Europeans brought new animal and plant species to New Zealand, creating the wide variety of plant and animal species we have today.

Maori used land mostly for setting traps, building minimal houses and bringing in less species than the European. While the early Europeans used the land for house, farms and introduced many new plants and animals, some causing many trouble for the land as well as the people living here. Both the Maori and European used and changed the natural environment, but the European brought in things that changed the environment drastically, where as the Maori used more of the natural environment that was already there, without bringing in as much resources, animals, plants, etc.
