- after the Wall Street Crash 1929 —> America’s Great Economic Depression began = lots of poverty and we can see this poverty through TKAM
- ## for example the Cunninghams live in the countryside and we are told that the crash hit these people harder than ever

- there was an abolition of slavery after the American Civil War which changed the legal position of black people in society
- white people now saw black people as potential competitors for jobs etc
- this fear led to the belief that black people desired all that white people had.

- trials where 9 black men accused of raping 2 white women
- years later it was found that all the men were innocent
