Back Flashcards
Lumbosacral angle
Located at the junction of the lumbar region of the vertebral column and sacrum.
Body of a vertebrae
Small and wider from side to side than anterioposteriorly.
Vertebral foramen
Large and triangular. Hole.
# of Cervical # of Thoracic # of Lumbar # of Sacral # of Coccyx
7 Cervical 12 Thoracic 5 Lumbar 5 Sacral 4 Coccyx
Causes of Scoliosis
Asymmetric weakness of the intrinsic back muscles (myopathic scoliosis), failure of half of a vertebra to develop (hemivertebra), and a difference in the length of the lower limbs.
Vertebral Body
Gives support to the vertebral column and supports body weight
Epiphysial rim
Smooth bone surrounding the vertebral body. Cartilage remmants permit some diffusion of fluid between the IV disc and capillaries in the vertebral body.
Intervertebral (IV) disks
semirigid disks, before the sacrum
Vertebral Arch
lies posterior to the vertebral body and is formed by right and left pedicles and laminae
Pedicles
Short, stout processes that join the vertebral arch to meet the vertebral body.
Laminae
Two broad flat plates of bone that unite in the midline.
Vertebral Canal
Contains the spinal cord, meninges (protective membranes), fat, spinal nerve roots, and vessels.
Vertebral notches
Indentations formed by the projection of the body and articular processes superior and inferior to the pedicles
IV foramina
Superior and inferior vertebral notches of adjacent vertebrae combine
Spinous process
Projects posteriorly (and usually inferiorly) from the vertebral arch at the junction of the laminae
Transverse processes (2)
project posteriolaterally from the junctions of the pedicles and laminae.
Articular processes (4)
two superior and two inferior-also arise from the junctions of the pedicles and laminae, each bearing an articular surface (facet).
Medial Attachment of the Trapezius
Medal third of superior nuchal line, external occipital notch, nuchal ligament, spinous processes of C7-T12 vertebrae
Lateral Attachment of the Trapezius
Lateral third of clavicle, acromion and spine of scapula
Innervation of the Trapezius
Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI; motor fibers) and C3, C4 spinal nerves
Main Action of the Trapezius
Descending part elevates, ascending part depresses and middle part, retracts scapula. Descending and ascending parts act together to rotate glenoid cavity superiorly
Medial attachment of the Latissimus Dorsi
Spinous processes of inferior six thoracic vertebrae, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, and inferior three or four ribs.
Lateral Attachment of the Latissimus Dorsi
Floor of intertubercular groove of humerus
Innervation
Thoracodoral nerve (C6, C7 through C8)
