Continuo
Short for Basso Continuo.
A keyboard instrument (harpsichord or organ) supplies harmonies for a figured bass and a bass string instrument. Principal role is to provide support to the harmony.
Figured Bass
Numbers underneath the bass line that indicate what chords to play
Cadence
Musical Punctuation used to identify the end of a phrase. Used to imply what’s happening next. Perfect, Plagal, Imperfect, Interrupted
Chorale
German hymn tune for 4 voices
Cantata
A setting from a section from the bible used in a service. Text is often altered or reworded as in this cantata. Cantata usually contains solo arias, duets, recitatives and chorus.
Tierce di Picardy
Common Baroque device. Changing from a minor key to a major key at the end of a section
Chaconne
Technique where ground bass passes into upper parts.
Aria
Vocal piece from an opera, cantata written for solo or duet singing. Melodic lines are elaborate and ornate and have melismatic sections
Recitative Secco
Recitative is a speech like singing used in cantatas. Usually syllabic. Sparse words, simple bass. Melody follows the rhythm of the words.
Appoggiatura
An ornament. Fills an interval or provides a suspension
Arioso
In the style of an aria. More melodic than declamatory.
