BAB 1b Flashcards
What are the two types of astrocytes and where are they found?
a. Protoplasmic, Gray Matter
b. Fibrillary, White Matter
What is Neuropril? Where is it found?
Unmyelinated axons/nerves. Found in neocortex and olfactory bulb.
What germ layer to microglial cells come from?
mesoderm.
When do microglial cells come out?
Encephalitis, esp. viral
In luxol-fast blue, what color is myelin?
blue.
What diseases affect myelin but spare axons?
CNS: multiple sclerosis (MS), progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)
PNS: Guillain-Barré
What is a dermatome?
Area of skin innervated by the dorsal root of one spinal nerve.
compare and contrast the Dorsal Column-Medial Lemniscal System (DC-MLS) and the Anterolateral System (ALS)
DC-MLS:
a. fine though, pressure, vibration, proprioception
b. encapsulated
c. low thresholds and small receptive fields
ALS:
a. painful stimuli and crude touch
b. bare nerve ending like nociceptors and thermal receptors
c. large receptive fields
The fascicles gracilis and cuneatus are part of what and carry sensations from where?
Both are part of the DC-LMS
FG: lower limbs (“G” for ground) and lower half of trunk
FC: upper limbs and upper half of trunk
Any lesion in the medial lemniscus will give rise to loss of what?
two point discrimination and proprioception in the contralateral side of the body.
What is Nissl?
RER. Purple in histology.
