BA Component Details Flashcards
Carrier frame and harness
Flame retardant composite nylon frame
450kg rated lifting eye/handle at the top
180kg rated grab handles on either side
Straps made of Kevlar webbing
Control module
Main interface between BA operator and the BA set
Incorporates a red alarm button and two green reset buttons
Incorporates a thermal alarm
Incorporates a motion alarm
Displays self-test status, pressure, time to empty, battery level and alarm conditions
Face mask with HUD
Polycarbonate wide view face mask
Self sealing under positive pressure
HUD contains 7 LEDs (6 in-use) displaying
- 1 battery level
- 1 warning triangle
- 4 X cylinder pressure
Pressure reducing valve assembly with mechanical low pressure warning whistle
Reduces cylinder pressure to intermediate pressure
Flow capacity of pressure reducer is 700lpm at full pressure
Whistle activates at 55 plus or minus 5 bar
Low pressure whistle has corresponding change in HUD, control module and buddy lights
Whistle does not rely on power from set
Power Module
Serves as the power source and provides information for the control module, regulator and speaker module (2 piezo speakers)
Incorporates buddy lights: the buddy lights will also illuminate red if an alarm condition is detected
Demand valve
Further lowers pressure from the pressure reducer to provide breathable air to the operator
Supplies air on demand via the first breath mechanism
Maintains a positive pressure
Voice projection speaker
Amplifies and clarifies speech from the face mask
Minimum volume of 75 decibels
Powers up automatically, and it ‘on’ status is indicated by 2 beeps and a blue LED
Buddy breather
Allows firefighters to quickly connect and share air from their cylinders
There are 17 formal steps. These can be summarised as:
- provide a sitrep
- the provider is the person who does not have an issue with their air supply or set and has a preferred minimum pressure of 150 bar
- provider removes their manifold, exposes the male coupling, and let it hang off their set
- locate the female coupling off the receivers set
- push the couplings firmly together to join, and then pull to ensure they are properly connected
- provide a sit rep and get out
Battery
Rechargeable lithium ion battery
Battery status can be viewed off the control module LCD
Change better when 1 red segment is visible 0-19%
You have 2 hours use from when this appears
Battery level has corresponding changes in HUD, buddy lights and on the control module
Cylinder
Carbon-fibre wrapped aluminium composite
Water volume = 6.8 litres
Volumetric capacity = 2040 litres of compressed dry air @ 300 bar
Weighs 7kg when full
Excess flow safety valve
Tally tag
Represents a firefighter’s presence in the hot zone
Each set has a tally tag, which must be left with BA entry before operations
