B9 - Respiration Flashcards
Describe Effects of exercise on respiration
Higher rate of breath
Higher heart rate
Higher
Explain Effects of exorcise on respiration
more muscle contractions = higher energy requirement = higher rate of respiration = more Oxygen and glucose delivery + higher rate of removing C02
Vasodilation - (Increase in blood flow through (to muscles that need it))
Anaerobic respiration
when Oxygen demand in muscles exceeds the rate of supply from the lungs/blood, energy is released from glucose without oxygen; anaerobically.
Lactic acid + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water.
Compare anaerobic respiration to aerobic.
anaerobic causes muscle fatigue, build up in lactic acid
aerobic respiration - breaks down glucose into energy and water using oxygen.
Compare anaerobic respiration in animals, bacteria and yeast
Some microorganisms form lactic acid during anaerobic respiration (i.e. the bacteria used to form yoghurts)
Fermentation – glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide (energy transferred to the environment)
Anaerobic equation
C₆H₁₂O₆+6O₂→6H₂0+6CO₂
Glucose + Oxygen → Water + Carbon Dioxide + (Energy) in ATP
where it occurs
inside mitochondria which releases energy from glucose and transfers it to molecules of ATP.
define aerobic respiration
•Aerobic respiration is when the energy transferred supplies all the energy needed for living processes (uses oxygen)
chemical reaction type
exothermic
