B15 - Adaptations, Interdependence And Competition Flashcards
Distribution
Where particular types of organisms are found within an environment.
Community
Group of interdependent living organisms in a community
Habitat
An area where organisms live
Ecosystem
Interacting organisms and their environment (non-living abiotic parts of said environment)
Interdependence
When different populations rely on each other
Biotic factors
Interaction of living things
Abiotic factors
Non-living elements of the environment.
Stable community
Communities where hey number of species and the population size stays relatively constant.
Organisms require…
Materials from their surroundings and other living organisms to survive and reproduce
Community
Within a community, each species depends on other species for food shelter, pollination, seed dispersal, etc. If one species is removed it can affect the whole community.
Abiotic factors that may affect communities of organisms include:
- Light intensity
- temperature
- moistness
- soil pH and mineral content
- wind intensity and direction
- Carbon dioxide and oxygen levels
Biotic factors that may affect communities of organisms include
- Availability of food
- new predators arriving
- new pathogens
- new competitors
